Tamron’s latest release has everyone talking—a new 50-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD lens designed for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras. This lens builds on user feedback about the limitations of the old 70-300mm zoom range, starting instead at 50mm while extending all the way to 300mm.

With a compact design measuring 150mm in length and weighing only 665g, this versatile lens offers Sony shooters a convenient solution for various photography needs. For those using an APS-C camera, the focal length equivalence jumps to an impressive 75-450mm.

The lens is constructed with 19 elements in 14 groups, featuring specialized components like 2 XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) and 2 LD (Low Dispersion) elements to minimize chromatic aberrations. Adding to this, Tamron’s BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) coating works to suppress ghosting and flare.

It doesn’t stop there; the VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor focus mechanism ensures quiet and responsive autofocus. This system is compatible with key camera functions such as Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF. The built-in VC (Vibration Compensation) system further enhances stability when moving or panning, making it easier to achieve clear shots in various conditions. Tamron even claims that under 100mm, AI is employed to improve stabilization.

“At 50mm, the minimum object distance is just 0.22m, allowing for close-range shooting with a magnification ratio of 1:2, making it qualify as a half-macro lens. Zoom in to 300mm, and the minimum distance becomes 0.9m, with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3.1,” according to Tamron.

For practical usability, the lens features a 67mm filter size, moisture-resistant construction, and a fluorine coating to repel dirt and grime. It also includes a focus set button and zoom lock mechanism for added convenience. The lens is compatible with Tamron Lens Utility software, allowing users to customize functions and update firmware easily.

Slated for release on June 27, the Tamron 50-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD is priced at $799 / £819 / AU$1,699 and is available for preorder now.

With its extended range, cutting-edge technology, and practical features, Tamron’s new lens is set to be a game-changer for Sony photographers. Whether shooting close-up or at a distance, this lens offers the versatility and performance that modern photographers demand.
