Sigma has just dropped its latest flagship lens, the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art II for E and L Mount, and it’s here to redefine standard zoom lenses.
This new lens is not just an upgrade but a significant leap forward. It’s 7% smaller and 10% lighter than its predecessor, weighing in at just 745g and measuring 87.8 x 120.2mm. Compared to the original 835g and 88 x 125g, that’s a noticeable difference! Though it’s not as light as the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II, which weighs 695g, it more than makes up for it in price and performance.
Sigma didn’t just stop at making the lens smaller and lighter. They’ve packed in a High-response Linear Actuator (HLA) motor for the autofocus actuator, tripling the maximum drive speed of the original lens. While this doesn’t directly mean triple the AF speed, it does offer substantial performance improvements across the zoom range.
Optical performance has also received a boost. The lens now meets the resolving needs of new high-resolution cameras. Plus, focus breathing is well-controlled, making it a great option for video shooters. The optical formula remains similar with 19 elements in 5 groups, but now includes 5 aspherical elements, up from 3, along with 6 fluorite low dispersion and 2 special low dispersion elements.
Some handy new features have been added as well. The aperture ring is now de-clickable for smoother control, and there’s a second customizable AFL button perfect for portrait shooting. Despite these additions, the lens maintains the same filter size as its predecessor and stays weather-sealed.
If you’re already a fan of the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art, this new version has plenty to offer without changing too much of what you love. It’ll be available by the end of May, priced at $1,199 / £1,179, with Australian pricing yet to be confirmed.
The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art II is poised to be one of the best standard zoom lenses for both Sony and L-Mount cameras, combining compact size, lightweight build, and excellent performance at a competitive price.
