Canon has just announced the much-anticipated development of the EOS R1, a full-frame mirrorless camera that will be the new flagship model for the EOS R SYSTEM. Slated for release in 2024, this camera aims to bring top-notch performance to professionals across various fields like sports, news reporting, and video production.

The EOS R1 promises a blend of cutting-edge technology and top-class performance, paired with the durability and reliability expected from a flagship model. It aims to significantly enhance performance for both still images and video, surpassing previous models like the EOS R3.

Canon has equipped the EOS R1 with a newly developed image processor called the DIGIC Accelerator, in addition to the existing DIGIC X. This combination, along with a new CMOS sensor, allows for the processing of large volumes of data at exceptional speeds. The result is unprecedented advancements in Auto Focus (AF) and other functionalities.

By leveraging deep learning technology, Canon has managed to improve high-speed, high-accuracy subject recognition. This is particularly useful in team sports where multiple subjects often intersect. The advanced subject-tracking feature ensures the main subject remains in focus, even when another player moves in front of them.

The camera’s AF ‘Action Priority’ function quickly analyzes and recognizes subject movement. In unpredictable moments during sports events, this feature identifies key players performing crucial actions, like shooting a ball, and instantly shifts the AF frame to capture these decisive moments.

Canon is also implementing an image noise reduction function, traditionally available as part of their PC software, directly into the camera. This aims to further enhance image quality and support user creativity.

Field tests are already underway, and Canon aims to capture definitive and impactful moments at upcoming international sporting events. Ongoing efforts to expand the EOS R SYSTEM lineup reflect Canon’s commitment to meeting a wide range of user demands and contributing to the evolution of photography and video culture.

Canon’s EOS R1 is shaping up to be a game-changer for professional photographers and videographers. With its slated release in 2024, it promises to push the boundaries of what’s possible in imaging technology.
